Hot chocolate and cold weather go hand in hand, but if you’re looking for a mix other than the one you grew up drinking, where do you start? The foodies at Delish did the research for us and tested more than a dozen cocoa mixes to find the best ones on store shelves. Here are the four best, broken down by category.
- Most splurge-worthy: Jacques Torres Classic Hot Chocolate. This one is super fudgy thanks to chunks of dark chocolate in the mix. It’s a little pricey at $20, but it would be a great gift for the chocolate lover on your list.
- Best budget: Swiss Miss Classic Milk Chocolate. If you want to sip something that tastes like your childhood, this mix is it. The reviewer says the “cocoa flavor is significantly richer than other supermarket finds,” so it’s a real bargain at less than $2.
- Fancy but affordable: Trader Joe’s Sipping Chocolate. This mix is thicker and more indulgent than an ordinary cup of cocoa and it’s only about the fifth of the splurge-worthy one. The only downside is you have to go to a Trader Joe’s store to buy it.
- Most decadent: Sur La Table Double Dark Hot Chocolate. This fancy stuff is made with Valrhona chocolate, the high-end stuff chefs use, and the mix calls for milk and cream, so it’s not your average cocoa mix. It’s expensive at $22 a tin, but they say it’s worth it, if you love chocolate.
